Governance

HKNW is a voluntary community initiative of the residents of Helderkruin and Kloofendal.

Due to a common objective by residents to work together as a caring and involved community in making our suburbs safe.

Yes, very much so, although independent, it enjoys the patronage and support of SAPS who attend HKNW’s monthly meetings.

It co-operates with the Roodepoort Community Police Forum which supports all similar initiatives in the Roodepoort policing area.

Yes, it was adopted by members in general meeting who must approve any amendments.

Indeed, the members of the Committee consisting amongst others of a Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer and Patrol Head, are annually elected at a general meeting.

Finances

Membership fees are R50 p/m or R500 p/a with a R100 joining fee in both cases. Annual payment is preferred to limit administration.

HKNW does not provide a service to its members who all voluntarily work together WITH and FOR each other in a spirit of good neighbourliness.

To defray communication and administration costs and to contribute to the expense incurred by patrollers in the use of their private vehicles.

Electronic fund transfer via the internet or deposit into our bank account.

Your statement will be emailed to you on a monthly basis.

Membership

Households residents in Helderkruin and Kloofendal.

All relevant departments within HKNW are informed and all patrollers are notified of your address.  You are also added to the SMS and e-mail communication lists.  A HKNW house identification board is ordered, delivered and fitted to the front of your property.

No, the first line of action is always to phone 10111 and obtain a reference number.

Become involved in your immediate neighbourhood by getting to know your neighbours, by looking out for each other and getting them to join.

Patrollers

Patrollers are normal members who patrol their area in their spare time.

All able members are strongly encouraged to patrol as it increases visibility which acts as a crime deterrent.

Whenever it suits you during the day or evening and preferably once a week

Yes, you will first accompany one of our existing patrollers before starting on your own.

Patrollers merely show a presence and act as the ‘eyes and ears’ of the SA Police Services.  It is NOT expected of patrollers to get involved in any incidents, apart from reporting it to the Sector Police.

Admin

Yes, all incidents are to be reported to info@helderkloof.org.za as well as the SAPS.  Incidents reported assist with patrol planning as well as ascertaining if there are any areas which are being targeted during a specific month.

Yes, you can email info@helderkloof.org.za and patrollers will be informed that you are away from your home.

Yes, every second Monday of each month a general public meeting is held at Helderkruin Laerskool.  Further regular newsletters are sent to members via email and our newly launched website will also share important information with all members.

General

Neighbourhood Watch is recognised internationally as one of the most effective voluntary organisations and the best example of police and communities working in partnership to reduce crime and build safer communities.

Not at all. Everything said and written about Neighbourhood Watch shows that you are in effect doing what every responsible citizen should be doing – helping the police and your neighbours to create and maintain a safe, crime-free community.

Disabled people can definitely join and often prove to be the most useful members.

Yes. Members can buy their own equipment as specified by the neighbourhood watch’s radio communication specialist, in that way further improving communication in general and during patrols.
